Castwide

Help & FAQ

Most problems have a quick fix. Inside Castwide, click the ? next to any warning for steps that match what you see.

Getting started

How do I set up OBS to send to Castwide?

The easy way: open Castwide's setup guide (Settings > Run setup again) and click Point OBS at Castwide. It changes OBS > Settings > Stream for you, with Undo.

By hand: in OBS go to Settings > Stream, set Service to Custom..., then copy the Server and Stream Key from Castwide's Destinations page (Connect OBS). Click Apply.

For "Connect to OBS", turn on Tools > WebSocket Server Settings > Enable WebSocket server in OBS (port 4455). If OBS shows a password, paste it into Castwide.

Windows says "Windows protected your PC"

Castwide isn't code-signed yet, so Windows doesn't recognise it. Click More info, then Run anyway. You only need to do this once per version.

Starting the stream in OBS doesn't put me live

That's on purpose. Streaming in OBS only sends your video to Castwide, so you can check the preview first. Press Go Live in Castwide to go live on your platforms.

Does Castwide start with Windows?

No, never. It only runs when you open it. Opening it again just brings the open window forward.

Quality and resolution

OBS is set to 1440p but Castwide shows 1080p

This is usually Rescale Output. In OBS go to Settings > Output. With Output Mode set to Advanced, look on the Streaming tab for Rescale Output. If it's ticked and set to 1920x1080, OBS shrinks your stream before sending it. Untick it (or set it to 2560x1440) and click Apply.

Also check Settings > Video > Output (Scaled) Resolution is 2560x1440. Castwide's Input chip shows what it receives from OBS.

Can I stream 1440p to YouTube and still stream to Twitch?

Yes. YouTube accepts 1440p and 4K. Twitch accepts up to 1080p, so for Twitch, open the destination in Castwide and set its Quality to 1080p. Castwide then makes a 1080p copy for Twitch while YouTube gets your full 1440p.

If YouTube shows only 1080p, your YouTube stream key may be set to a fixed resolution. Sign in to YouTube in Castwide and let it use a key that accepts any resolution (the "?" in Castwide explains this).

What bitrate should I use?

Run Castwide's speed test and use the bitrate it suggests. Remember each destination uploads separately, so add them together. For example, 3 destinations at 6,000 kbps need about 18 Mbps of upload, plus some room to spare. If your stream drops frames or destinations reconnect, lower the bitrate in OBS.

Sign-ins

YouTube says "sign-in expired" every week

This is expected for now. Castwide's Google sign-in is still waiting for Google's verification, and until then Google ends sign-ins after 7 days. Click Sign in again in Castwide. Your saved stream key keeps working, so your stream isn't affected. This stops once Google has verified Castwide.

Twitch says "sign-in expired"

Twitch ends sign-ins when you change your password or remove Castwide in Twitch > Settings > Connections. Click Sign in again. Going live is never blocked: your stream still goes to Twitch with the saved stream key.

Facebook sign-in only works for some people

Castwide is still going through Meta's App Review. Until that's done, Facebook only lets approved testers sign in. You can still stream to Facebook by pasting a stream key from Facebook's Live Producer.

How do I connect StreamElements tips?

In Castwide go to Alerts > Connections > Connect StreamElements and follow the 4 steps. You copy your JWT token (not your Account ID) from StreamElements > Account > Channels. It's stored encrypted on your PC and only ever sent to StreamElements.

Overlays, chat and alerts

How do I add the chat or alert overlay to OBS?

Open Overlays in Castwide, pick the chat or alert design and click Add to OBS (needs Connect to OBS). After you change a design, click Update in OBS. It works while you're live.

Alerts don't show on stream

Check the Show alerts on stream switch in Castwide's Alerts page (it may be paused), and check the platform is switched on under Show on overlay in the alert designer. Send a test alert to check the overlay in OBS.

Updates and problems

How do I update?

The installed version updates itself from GitHub. To check now, go to Settings > Check and install updates. If you're live, Castwide waits until your stream ends before restarting. The Portable version tells you when there's a new version and links to the download. You can always get the latest version from the download button.

Castwide crashed or something isn't working

Castwide saves a crash report on your PC. Save it from Settings > Crash reports and upload it here, or open a GitHub issue. Please describe what you were doing when it happened.

Is Castwide really free?

Yes. No paid tier, no licence key, no account and no ads. It stays free.

Is there a Mac or Linux version?

No, Castwide is Windows only (Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit).

Still stuck?

Open an issue on GitHub and say what you see, which Castwide version you have (shown at the bottom left of Castwide) and what you've tried. Don't post stream keys or tokens, because issues are public.
